Description: Student-athletes should be able to speak openly about their mental health experiences without worrying about being judged or viewed as weak. However, fewer than half (47%) of student-athletes feel comfortable seeking mental health support (NCAA, 2021). Recent college graduates affiliated with the nonprofit The Hidden Opponent will share how their campus advocacy program amplifies the voices and needs of student-athletes and highlights the challenges they continue to face and why mental health is essential in athletics.

Rooted in a dynamic story-sharing format displayed through mixed mediums, Send Silence Packing® is an immersive experience that illustrates the stories and centers the voices of youth and young adults as they guide us through their mental health journeys. Now entering its 15th year on the road, SSP has connected over a million visitors in more than a hundred communities with resources and tools for skills and support. The exhibit serves as a launching point toward a larger year-long commitment that mobilizes each school and community to change the way they think, talk, and feel about mental health and (perhaps most importantly) how they show up for the people around them.

With 37% of Americans (122 million people) living in a “mental health shortage area,” friends and family are vital touchstones in our mental health journeys and can act as an important line of defense when the professional mental health workforce is stretched too thin. While 84% of youth (18-29) feel comfortable talking to their friends when they are struggling, 67% of peers don’t feel equipped to help them. Active Minds is proud to partner with MTV to help promote peer support among youth. To explore both the opportunities and challenges associated with peer support, MTV journalist Dometi Pongo will moderate a panel of young adult mental health activists to share their lived experiences and perspectives, alongside MTV and Active Minds.

Description: Kassidy Tolbert, a suicide loss survivor, shares her personal story and experience of processing grief through group therapy and workshops with other survivors like them. Compared to the general population, suicide loss survivors are more at risk for suicide attempts making it all the more important that they receive tailored support. Kassidy will share with fellow young adult attendees lessons on suicide prevention and strategies for processing suicide loss and grief.

Description: Gun violence is the number one killer of kids and teens in America. This fact alone impacts young people’s mental health on a daily basis. Suicide, intimate partner gun violence, and city gun violence are all avenues that equally impact young people. We have brought together three very different experiences of gun violence to discuss the impact on their mental health in a trauma informed setting.

988 now exists as a new easy to use number to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (previously the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline). Though the Lifeline itself is far from new, it’s hoped that with the creation of the three-digit number, the Lifeline will be more easily-recalled in moments of crisis. Moderated by Dr. Tia Dole, Chief 988 Officer at Vibrant Emotional Health, this panel of young adults will reflect on the successes of 988 and explore the necessary continued work in the broader mental health movement - including the vital work of including youth voices - around keeping those in crisis safe, protected, and connected.

Description: The term “glass children” refers to siblings of children with mental and/or physical illnesses. With no outward difficulties of their own, they may feel overlooked by parents who are overburdened with caretaking; all while experiencing emotional burdens of their own, including perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies that stem from the pressure of adding no extra burden onto their parents in early childhood.
